What is Thyroid Cancer?
Thyroid cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the thyroid gland, a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the front of the neck. The thyroid produces hormones that regulate metabolism, body temperature, and heart rate.
There are several types of thyroid cancer, including:
Papillary carcinoma: The most common type, accounting for about 80% of cases. It typically grows slowly and is highly treatable.
Follicular carcinoma: The second most common type, which also has a good prognosis if detected early.
Medullary carcinoma: This rarer form may be associated with genetic factors and can spread more easily to other parts of the body.
Anaplastic carcinoma: A very aggressive and rare form of thyroid cancer, which grows quickly and is harder to treat.
Thyroid cancer is generally treatable, especially when detected early. Treatment options may include surgery, radioactive iodine therapy, and, in some cases, radiation or chemotherapy. The prognosis depends on the type of cancer and its stage at diagnosis
