A Jordanian doctor removes a rare tumor from the face of an Emirati girl

The medical condition of a girl suffering from a rare case due to a congenital defect
A British-Jordanian doctor residing in Dubai successfully removed a congenital cyst from the face of an Emirati girl in a rare operation to remove this cyst, which was classified as the largest congenital cyst recorded in this field.
According to Dr.Jehad Al Sukhun, a maxillofacial surgeon, “The girl’s case was rare, and she is 9 years old. She came from the Emirate of Fujairah as an emergency patient, as she was no longer able to eat and was suffering from severe difficulty in swallowing and breathing. After clinical examination, blood tests, and MRI imaging, we found a large cyst occupying the entire left side of the floor of the mouth under the tongue, extending into a large swelling in the left side of the neck.”
The diagnosis was confirmed as a congenital cyst, resulting from a developmental or congenital defect since birth, which can appear early in childhood or later in life, as in the case of this 9-year-old girl. An emergency surgery was arranged to remove the entire cyst.
This is considered the largest cyst of its kind reported in scientific journals or as a medical case, measuring about 4 x 8 cm at its largest diameter. There was a risk of nerve or blood vessel injury that could have left the girl with partial paralysis, but the patient recovered well without any complications.

Congenital deformities, such as cleft lip, cleft palate, and congenital cysts, are medical challenges faced by surgeons in Dubai. The United Arab Emirates has a higher rate of these developmental defects compared to other parts of the world due to consanguineous marriages.
This case highlights the importance of performing appropriate genetic diagnostic tests before and/or at birth. It also emphasizes the importance of having a fully equipped hospital to manage and treat these congenital or developmental defects.
According to Al-Sakhn, it is important to refer such cases to a surgeon with experience in managing these rare conditions. The surgery was managed and performed by Professor Dr. Jihad Al-Sakhn, a British/Jordanian oral and maxillofacial surgeon, without complications, restoring the patient’s normal quality of life.
